Desiree Dufresne is focused on painting, illustration, and digital art. Her work alternates between bright and muted palettes and frequently takes a surreal or abstract expressionist approach.
Common themes include juxtaposition: funny and macabre, beautiful and ugly, alive and dead, just to name a few; the experiences of women as the subjects of so many competing gazes (and how they so often subvert that gaze with their power); and the many sources of beauty, peace, fear, and horror among animals and other aspects of the natural world. All of her work is situated in the current uncertain political, social, economic, cultural, and environmental climate of late-capitalist America, and one can see her engagement with this climate in all of her work. Desiree is a self-taught artist who has been drawn to creative expression her whole life, in visual art, writing, and history. She has a Master of Arts degree in Gender & Women's History from CSUN, and has been accepted to the esteemed MFA program in Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design, which she plans to begin in 2019. She grew up in Ventura, California, and currently lives and creates art in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles. |
